There was a time when my partner and I lost our motivation to go to the gym because of an incident that was handled in poor taste by one of the trainers. What was once an exciting activity, now felt more like a chore that we had to do. And so, we started dreading it.
These negative feelings soon affected everything -
Our form was always wrong
Our weight was going up and down
We didn’t feel good
At first, we decided to just finish our current package since we already paid for it and find something else to do. That did not work. Going to the gym still felt cumbersome. Then we figured, either we stop this all together because this is becoming a waste of time or work on something we can control - ourselves.
In our next session, we made the conscious effort to put the incident behind us and to instead show up with a positive attitude. We’re choosing to be here anyway so might as well enjoy it.
From there, the quality of our workout improved. Instead of focusing on what happened, we were in our own worlds, focusing on ourselves. We were doing this for us. Not for anyone else.
You see, no matter how “great” you may be, if you approach things with a sour attitude, you’ll produce less than mediocre results. But if you approach things with a positive energy, an open mind and with a clear focus on your objectives, you’ll not only get to your results, you’ll get there with excellence.
So, when you have to do something, try leaving the negativity behind. You HAVE to do it anyway, so why not enjoy it?
